Golf is almost life.
If it weren’t for family, food, and faith (my holy “F trinity”), I could comfortably remove the word “almost” from that opener.
Ironically enough, if you book a tee time at Sable Creek Golf Course, you’ll get the vibe of my “F trinity,” in addition to an exceptional golf experience. And that’s why the 27-hole gem, tucked away in a quiet corner of Hartville, Ohio, is the inaugural Sonda Green golf course review.

So does he. Watch this one (on No. 7 of the Gold 9) lip out 🙄

Having nine extra holes is an unfair advantage to the “Layout” part of the evaluation, but the extra “Gold” nine — paired with what I consider the traditional 18 in the “Black to Maroon” nines — give Sable Creek five stars.
When you turn from Black to Maroon, you get 18 holes (6,800+ yards from the tips) that can challenge the best golfers you know. The first two holes on the Black, in particular, are a stiff challenge to start the round. If you’re looking for an easier go at things, the Gold nine offers three Par 3s and a scorable Par 5.
The course is tree-lined but open. The holes don’t feature much elevation change, but they use water, sand and general layout to keep you on your toes. Faders and drawers of the ball will find plenty of room to work, you just have to pick your landing spots and attack angles carefully.
The greens, you’ll find, run exceptionally true and acceptably fast. If you’re accustomed to country club speed, these bentgrass greens won’t match that standard, but they certainly won’t disappoint you.
And neither will the food! If you’re fortunate to find Theresa behind the counter, ask for a breakfast sandwich with crispy bacon!
The only knock I can think to give Sable comes with pace of play, but it’s not even fair to knock the course here. That’s a challenge any course with three nines is forced to deal with. I’d argue Sable Creek manages the turning of three nines better than most courses handle two. I’ve never played a six-hour round at Sable, but I’ve played plenty of those at other courses in the area.
All in all, if you’re looking for a casual round with friends/family or a tough course to challenge your game, you don’t have to travel far if you live in Northeast, Ohio. Visit Sable Creek and tell them Sonda Green sent you.
